The Malecón de Salinas is the seafront promenade that runs along the Santa Elena Bay-facing beach of Salinas city. It is the social and tourist heart of the canton — a busy, walkable strip of restaurants, bars, seafood shacks, hotels, and services facing the calm bay waters.

Description

The malecón runs roughly west-east along the main Salinas bay, with the beach on one side and commercial buildings on the other. The western end (toward Chipipe) is quieter and more residential in character; the central and eastern sections are the tourist hub.

The bay side of Salinas is sheltered from Pacific swell — the water on the malecón side is calm, making it safe for casual swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, and kayaking, especially during the high season (December–April) when water temperatures reach 25–31°C.

What's On the Malecón

  • Restaurants and cevicherías — seafood restaurants line the waterfront; the malecón is one of the best places to eat fresh ceviche, corvina, and encebollado on the peninsula
  • Bars and nightlife — active particularly during weekends and the high season (December–Carnaval)
  • Street food and vendors — coco frío (fresh coconut), fresh fruit, grilled corn, artisan souvenirs
  • Whale watching tour operators — several operators depart from the malecón during the June–September season
  • Water sports rentals — paddleboard and kayak rentals on the beach in front of the malecón
  • Fishing pier — at one end of the malecón, local fishers and occasional pelicans
  • Hotels — the main hotel concentration faces the malecón

The Beach

The beach in front of the malecón is wide, dark-grey sand. It is calm and safe for swimming during the bay-season months. At peak season (Carnaval, New Year) it fills completely and space becomes scarce. During the dry season (May–November) the beach is far emptier and the water cooler, but still pleasant.

Note: The malecón beach is the tourist beach of Salinas. For surfing, Playa de La FAE - La Loberia (Salinas) (La Lobería) on the south side of the headland near the Naval Base is the surf beach. For wilder conditions, Mar Bravo.

High Season vs Low Season

  • December–April: The malecón is at its liveliest. Full hotels, outdoor dining, music from restaurants, beach crowds. This is the best time for warm-water swimming.
  • June–September: Quieter, cooler, better for whale watching. Many restaurants still open but the volume of visitors drops significantly. Prices lower.
  • October–November: Quietest period. Some restaurants reduce hours. Good for uncrowded beach time.

Getting There

The malecón is central Salinas — all taxis know it. From La Libertad, take Linea 11 or a taxi ($3–5).
