The Chanduy salt flats (salinas de Chanduy) are a remarkable natural and cultural landscape on the southern Santa Elena Peninsula. Located near the small fishing village of Chanduy, the flat, shallow coastal lagoons have been used for artisanal salt production for centuries — likely since pre-Columbian times.

Salt Production

The salt flats operate through traditional evaporation methods. Seawater is channeled into shallow pans, where the equatorial sun evaporates the water over days and weeks, leaving behind crystalline sea salt. Local families (salineros) rake and collect the salt by hand. The sight of the bright white salt pans against the blue sky is visually striking.

Visitors can observe and sometimes participate in the salt harvest. There is no formal visitor center; the best approach is to arrive in the village, ask locally, and engage directly with the salt-working families.

Birdwatching

The shallow, saline lagoons attract an excellent range of shorebirds and wading birds, making Chanduy a rewarding stop for birders:

  • Flamingos (Chilean Flamingo — seasonal visitors)
  • Various herons and egrets
  • Stilts and avocets
  • Sandpipers and other migrant shorebirds (November–April)

The mix of saltwater and nearby mangrove habitat supports high bird diversity.

The Village of Chanduy

Chanduy itself is a quiet fishing village with little tourist infrastructure. There are small comedores (basic restaurants) and a fishing pier. The village sits in a sheltered bay — local fishermen use small panga boats.

Getting There

Chanduy is located approximately 35 km south of La Libertad via the coastal road or the inland route through Progreso. No direct bus service to the salt flats; a taxi or private vehicle from La Libertad or Santa Elena is the most practical option. Allow 45–60 minutes driving.
