ECUAWIKI › PLACES TO VISIT › AYANGUE BAY

Ayangue Bay is one of the most beautiful and protected natural bays on the Santa Elena Peninsula. Sheltered by rocky headlands on both sides, the horseshoe-shaped bay creates calm, warm, crystal-clear water that is ideal for swimming and snorkeling — a rarity on the otherwise wave-pounded Pacific coast.

The Bay's Geography

The bay faces almost due west and is enclosed by two rocky promontories. This geometry blocks the prevailing southern Pacific swell, making the water inside the bay much calmer than the open beaches to the north and south. The water is typically clear enough to see the sandy bottom and reef fish. Water temperatures average 22–26°C.

Snorkeling

Ayangue Bay is the best snorkeling location on the Peninsula. The rocky reefs at both ends of the bay support a diverse marine community including:

  • Tropical reef fish (parrotfish, angelfish, sergeant majors)
  • Sea turtles (commonly seen near the rocks)
  • Rays (spotted eagle ray, round stingray)
  • Octopus and moray eels under rocks
  • Sea urchins and starfish

Snorkel gear can be rented from local shops on the beach. The best snorkeling is at the north end of the bay around the rocky headland.

Nearby: Reserva Marina El Pelado

Just offshore from Ayangue is the Reserva Marina El Pelado, a small rocky islet that serves as a marine reserve and sea lion colony. Dive trips (see Scuba Diving) visit the islet regularly, and it can be approached by motorboat from the beach.

Other Activities

  • Swimming — The calm water is ideal for all abilities, including children
  • Kayaking — Kayaks available for rent on the beach
  • Stand-Up Paddleboarding — SUP boards available
  • Boat Tours — Motorboat tours to El Pelado and nearby beaches

Facilities

The small village of Ayangue lines the back of the bay with seafood restaurants, small hotels, and beachside equipment rental stands. Parking is available (fee on weekends). The beach fills with Ecuadorian families on weekends and holidays — arrive early for the best spots.

Getting There

From La Libertad, take the coastal road north toward Palmar and Ayangue (approximately 30 minutes). Buses from La Libertad market pass through or near Ayangue. Taxis are available — see Taxis and Taxi Apps on the Peninsula.
