Pharmacies on Duty
Ecuador's farmacias de turno system ensures at least one pharmacy is open 24 hours in each area — here's how to find which one is on duty on the Santa Elena Peninsula.

The Turno System

Ecuador operates a mandatory farmacia de turno (duty pharmacy) rotation system. All pharmacies in a given area take turns being the 24-hour duty pharmacy. On any given night, at least one pharmacy in Salinas, one in La Libertad, and one in Santa Elena will be open.

How to Find Tonight's Duty Pharmacy

  1. Check any closed pharmacy's door — by law, each pharmacy must post the name and address of the current duty pharmacy on their window
  2. Ask your taxi driver — taxi drivers are the most reliable real-time source; they always know
  3. Ask at your hotel reception — hotels usually know or can call to find out
  4. Call 911 — in a genuine medical emergency, the ECU-911 operator can direct you

Main Pharmacy Chains on the Peninsula

  • Fybeca — major national chain; branches in Salinas and La Libertad
  • Cruz Azul — cooperative pharmacy chain; multiple locations
  • Sana Sana — national chain; La Libertad
  • Independent pharmacies in smaller towns and villages

Prescriptions

Many common medications are available over the counter in Ecuador that require prescriptions elsewhere. However, controlled substances (antibiotics, certain pain medications) require a valid Ecuadorian prescription. Doctors at hospitals and clinics can issue prescriptions.
