Overview

Windsurfing on the Santa Elena Peninsula uses the same Salinas Bay thermal wind system as kitesurfing — a reliable afternoon breeze that builds from around noon and dies at sunset. The bay side of the peninsula (between Salinas and Ballenita) provides flat to lightly choppy water, sheltered from open-Pacific swell by the peninsula's shape.

The wind regime is driven by the thermal differential between the cold Humboldt Current upwelling and the heated continental interior. June through November (the dry/garúa season) offers the most consistent wind; December–May (beach/rainy season) brings calmer, lighter conditions.

Windsurfing is less established than kitesurfing on the peninsula — bring your own gear. The main launch area is the Salinas malecón bay side.

Getting There

The Salinas malecón is accessible by public bus from La Libertad or by taxi ($3–5 from La Libertad).
