"The bay at Salinas is genuinely flat before 9am. Sea lions drift past, the water is clear enough to see the bottom, and if you're out there in whale season you will hear them before you see them."
Stand-up paddleboarding on the Santa Elena Peninsula is centred on the calm, sheltered waters of Salinas bay — one of the flattest and most accessible SUP environments on Ecuador's coast. The same geography that makes Salinas ideal for swimming and kayaking works for SUP: the bay faces north into Santa Elena Bay, shielded from Pacific swell, with a sandy bottom, clear water, and reliable flat conditions in the mornings.
The peninsula has a dedicated local SUP school — Kalifas Escuela de SUP — offering lessons, board rentals, and retail in Salinas. They cover the full range of SUP disciplines: surf SUP, paddle SUP, race SUP, SUP fitness, and distance paddling. Reservations are required and strongly recommended, particularly in high season.
Beyond Salinas, Ballenita cove and the La Libertad waterfront offer quieter flat-water alternatives for paddlers bringing their own boards — less activity, more atmosphere, same morning wind window.

Salinas Bay
The sheltered arc of Salinas bay is the best flat-water SUP on the peninsula. Calm mornings produce glassy conditions ideal for all SUP disciplines — beginner paddle lessons, fitness sessions, race training, and touring westward toward La Lobería and the La FAE headland. The water is clear enough in the mornings to watch the sandy bottom pass beneath the board, and sea lion encounters along the La Lobería stretch are common.
In whale season (June–September), paddling in the bay gives an unusually intimate perspective — humpback song carries clearly through the water and the occasional surface breach is visible from standing height on a board. Maintain the legal 50 m minimum approach distance from any whale.
The afternoon wind is the main limitation. From around midday the bay surface becomes choppy and SUP becomes significantly harder — especially for beginners. The optimal window is 6am–11am. Kalifas Escuela de SUP is the local school for lessons and rentals; book in advance.

Ballenita Cove
The sheltered cove at Ballenita offers flat water comparable to Salinas bay with considerably less boat traffic and a more authentic fishing-village setting. Paddling among the artisanal fleet at dawn is a memorable experience — the low angle of a SUP board makes the fishing boats feel enormous at close range. No rental available; bring your own board. The Farallón Dillon islet is reachable by SUP on a calm day, though conditions need to be genuinely flat for the crossing.

La Libertad Waterfront
The bay-facing waterfront of La Libertad gives a workaday, unhurried SUP stretch with views of the commercial port and fishing activity. Less scenic than Salinas or Ballenita but a practical option for paddlers based in the city. No rental available — bring your own board. Watch for vessel traffic leaving the port area in the early morning; give fishing boats a wide berth.

HYPR NALU boards
Kalifas covers all major SUP formats — the right one depends on your goals and experience level.
|
🏄
SUP Surf
Riding waves on a SUP board. Chulluype (Ballenita) on lighter days offers the best surf SUP conditions on the peninsula. Requires solid balance and board control — not a beginner discipline. A shorter, more rockered board than a flat-water touring board is needed.
|
🚣
SUP Paddle / Touring
Flat-water distance paddling. Salinas bay westward toward La Lobería is the main touring route — calm mornings, sea life encounters, cliff scenery as you move away from the hotel zone. The most accessible discipline for beginners once basic balance is established.
|
🏁
SUP Race
Competitive and training paddling. Salinas bay provides a flat, measurable course for interval training and race preparation. Downwind runs are possible in the afternoon wind — though this requires strong paddling skill to manage the chop. Ask Kalifas about local race events and training sessions.
|
|
💪
SUP Fitness
Yoga, core work, and fitness sessions on the board. The instability of a floating board dramatically amplifies the difficulty of standard exercises. Calm early-morning conditions in Salinas bay are ideal — flat water is essential for fitness sessions. Popular with visitors wanting something different from the gym.
|
📏
SUP Distance
Long-distance endurance paddling. The protected bay coastline between Salinas and Ballenita offers a navigable route of several kilometres for experienced paddlers wanting sustained distance work. Coordinate with Kalifas for route planning and safety logistics on longer crossings.

Conditions

| Dec–Apr
|
Best flat-water season. Warm water (22–26 °C), calm mornings, minimal wind before 10am. Ideal for beginners, fitness, and touring. Busiest time in Salinas — book Kalifas well in advance.
|
| May–Jun
|
Transition. Still good flat-water conditions in the mornings. Wind picking up earlier in June. Crowds drop after Semana Santa — easier to get bookings.
|
| Jul–Sep
|
Dry season. Stronger afternoon wind — start earlier, finish by 10–11am. Whale season makes morning paddling in Salinas bay especially rewarding. SUP surf at Chulluype improves as swell picks up.
|
| Oct–Nov
|
Improving conditions. Low crowds, lower prices. Good shoulder-season window for intermediate and advanced paddlers.
|
Wind rule — same as kayaking: The afternoon wind is consistent year-round on the Santa Elena Peninsula. The best SUP window is 6am–11am. After midday, flat-water SUP becomes significantly harder and SUP fitness sessions are impossible. Race and downwind SUP paddlers can use the afternoon wind productively — everyone else should be off the water.
- Always wear a leash — a SUP board without a leash in wind or chop becomes a hazard to other water users and is nearly impossible to recover if you fall. The leash is not optional.
- Life vest — wear one or carry one on the board. Mandatory for beginners and recommended for all solo paddlers.
- Respect the wind window — getting caught in the afternoon wind on a SUP is exhausting and can be dangerous for less experienced paddlers. Be back before noon.
- Boat traffic — Salinas bay has fishing vessel and recreational boat traffic. Stay in the designated swimming/watersports zone away from vessel lanes. Bright-coloured boards are more visible.
- Whale encounters (Jun–Sep) — 50 m legal minimum approach. Do not paddle toward surfacing whales. If a whale surfaces close to you, stay still and let it move away.
- Sun — paddling standing up at the equator with water reflection below means intense UV exposure on all surfaces. SPF 50+, reapply every 90 minutes. UV-protective rash guard recommended.

⚠ Safety Notes
⚠
Always wear a leash. A loose board in wind or chop is a danger to others and nearly impossible to recover.
⚠
Wind cutoff. Flat-water SUP off the water by 11am. Earlier in dry season.
ℹ
Whale approach. 50 m legal minimum Jun–Sep. Stay still if a whale surfaces close to you.
ℹ
Sun. SPF 50+, reapply every 90 min. UV rash guard recommended — water reflection intensifies exposure.
