Pick your beach

You want… Go to
Calm water for kids Chipipe, Salinas malecón (San Lorenzo), Ayangue
Snorkelling Ayangue, inside the El Pelado Marine Reserve
Surf Montañita, La Lobería, Coito at Punta Barandúa; Olón for beginners
Sunset La Chueca at Mar Bravo, or any west-facing beach on the Ruta
Long, empty sand Olón (3.3 km), San Pablo (3.2 km), Monteverde (2 km), Punta Blanca
Nature Palmar mangrove, Manglaralto estuary, Ayampe
Food and culture Cadeate (clay-oven bread), San Antonio (cazuela de orgía), Valdivia museum

The bay: Salinas and La Libertad

Calm water and every service close by — hospitals, shops and restaurants.

  • San Lorenzo and the Malecón de Salinas: the town beach. Packed from January to April and on holidays, quiet from June to November. Check how full it is on the live cam on the Peninsula portal.
  • Chipipe: the west end of the bay — shallower, calmer water and permanent volleyball nets. Busy at weekends, almost empty on weekdays.
  • Playa del Malecón (La Libertad): where local families go, with seafood all along the promenade.
  • Playa Cautivo: about 1 km in north-west La Libertad, in front of the English-style houses built in the 1920s for the oil company's managers.

Salinas' south shore: the open Pacific

Big swell and strong currents. Come here to surf, walk and watch — not to swim.

  • Mar Bravo: wide, wild and usually empty. No swimming. This is where to watch the sunset — at La Chueca.
  • La Lobería (Playa de La FAE): a powerful surf break for intermediate and advanced surfers — and the peninsula's only permanent sea lion colony.
  • Punta Carnero: a cliff headland inside the REMACOPSE reserve. Surf, and whale watching from June to September.

🏖️

The Ruta del Spondylus, south to north

West-facing village beaches, one after another. Any Ruta del Spondylus bus from Terminal Sumpa stops at all of them — see Buses Along the Ruta del Spondylus.

  • Ballenita: a quiet clifftop town. Watch whales for free from the cliffs in season.
  • Capaes: calm, open sand between Ballenita and Punta Blanca. There's a live cam.
  • Punta Centinela: next to Punta Blanca, home of the Royal Decameron all-inclusive resort.
  • Punta Blanca: 1.3 km of beach under white cliffs. The Coito surf break is at its south end, at Punta Barandúa. Ayangue is about 35 minutes north.
  • San Pablo: 3.2 km — the first big beach town on the route.
  • Monteverde: 2 km and quiet.
  • Jambelí: 1.2 km in front of a working fishing village.
  • Palmar: 1.3 km, with the biggest mangrove in the province — go by kayak.
  • Playa Rosada: a small, hidden beach between Palmar and Ayangue, down a side road off the highway.
  • Ayangue: a horseshoe bay with the calmest water on the coast and the best snorkelling.
  • San Pedro and Valdivia: fishing villages. Valdivia has Ecuador's first community museum.
  • Libertador Bolívar, San Antonio and Cadeate: quiet villages known for crafts, cazuela and clay-oven bread.
  • Río Chico: 1 km with its own estuary — a quiet base close to Montañita.
  • Manglaralto: 1.7 km and an estuary for birds and kayaks.
  • Montañita: 1.5 km — Ecuador's surf and nightlife capital.
  • Olón: 3.3 km, the longest beach in the canton. Good for beginner surfers and long walks.
  • Curia, San José and Las Núñez: unspoiled villages — horses on the sand at San José, painted murals at Las Núñez.
  • La Rinconada and La Entrada: high cliffs, then the province border.
  • Ayampe: on the border with Manabí, where the cloud forest meets the sea.

The quiet south

  • Ancón (1.5 km) and Chanduy (1.9 km) see almost no tourists — come for the history, the fishing boats and the empty sand.

Stay safe

  • Check the flags at beaches with lifeguards. Red means no swimming.
  • Mar Bravo and Punta Carnero are for surfing and walking, never for swimming.
  • Rip currents are common on the open Ruta beaches. If one pulls you out, swim parallel to the shore, then back in. See Swimming (Ruta del Spondylus).
  • After the first heavy rains of the year, storm drains can flush silt onto San Lorenzo — water quality may drop for a few days. See Natural Hazards on the Peninsula.
  • The sun is strongest from 11:00 to 15:00, even on cloudy days. See Sun and Heat on the Peninsula.
