José Luis Tamayo, still widely called Muey, is a rural parish of Salinas canton, inland from the Salinas beaches and next to La Libertad. It is one of the fastest-growing places on the peninsula.

A fast-growing parish
Muey grew by about 4.4% a year between the 2010 and 2022 censuses. Services are catching up: in 2023 about 63% of the parish was on the sewer and only 39% of its streets were paved, compared with 78% in central Salinas.
Health
The Hospital Básico Dr. Rafael Serrano López — often called the La Libertad hospital — is actually in this parish, along with the José Luis Tamayo health centre. See Medical Services.
Nature
Muey's traditional albarradas — small earth reservoirs that catch rainwater — are part of the canton's water heritage.
