* CNT — usually cheaper. CNT also has 5G in parts of Salinas, according to its website; it doesn't list La Libertad or the Ruta del Spondylus yet, so expect 4G there. Since September 2026 its SatPower plans can connect your phone directly to Starlink satellites where there is no signal at all (see below).
If one network is weak where you live, try another — coverage changes from street to street and along the Ruta del Spondylus.

Mobile data in Ecuador is affordable and generally reliable along the Santa Elena Peninsula. The three main carriers are Claro (América Móvil), Movistar (Telefónica), and CNT (state-owned). Coverage quality varies by carrier and location.

With SatPower, a compatible phone connects straight to Starlink satellites when it has no normal signal — on the open sea, on rural roads or in the hills. You need a clear view of the sky. By satellite you can use messages and a few apps: WhatsApp, Google Maps, X, ECU 911 and SMS — not full internet. Plans start at about $16 + IVA, and existing CNT customers can add it for $3 + taxes. Claro has the strongest and most consistent 4G LTE coverage across the Peninsula, including in smaller towns like Ayampe, Colonche, and along the coastal highway. Claro is the recommended carrier for those who travel frequently around the region.

* Buy a SIM ("chip") at a Claro, Tigo or CNT store, or at an authorised seller. Bring your passport or cédula — registration is required by law.

* Top up ("recarga") at corner shops, pharmacies, with the network's app or through online banking.

Movistar offers good coverage in major towns (Salinas, La Libertad, Santa Elena, Montañita) but may be weaker in rural or cliff-side areas.

Using a Foreign SIM / Roaming
If you are visiting short-term, roaming with a home carrier is possible but expensive. Most visitors purchase a local SIM on arrival for far better value. Ecuador uses standard nano-SIM and eSIM cards (eSIM availability expanding with Claro and Movistar).

For heavy internet users (streaming, video calls, remote work), mobile data alone may not be sufficient. See Getting Internet Installed for home fiber/cable internet options. See Hotspots for public WiFi locations across the Peninsula.

📶 Mobile Data Ecuador
Claro 5G in Salinas, Tigo instead of Movistar, and CNT plans that reach Starlink satellites where there is no signal.

Mobile data is cheap in Ecuador and works well in the peninsula's towns. There are now three networks: Claro, Tigo — the old Movistar, renamed after Millicom bought it and Tuenti in 2025 — and the state-owned CNT. For home internet, see Internet Service Providers.

The networks on the peninsula

 • Claro — the biggest network. Claro switched on 5G in Salinas in March 2026; you need a 5G phone and plan to use it.
 • Tigo (ex-Movistar) — good in the towns. Old Movistar and Tuenti SIMs keep working on Tigo, and the Mi Movistar app is now Mi Tigo.
 • CNT — usually cheaper.

CNT SatPower: signal where there is none

With SatPower, a compatible phone connects straight to Starlink satellites when it has no normal signal — on the open sea, on rural roads or in the hills. You need a clear view of the sky. By satellite you can use messages and a few apps: WhatsApp, Google Maps, X, ECU 911 and SMS — not full internet. Plans start at about $16 + IVA, and existing CNT customers can add it for $3 + taxes. See Internet Service Providers for the current plans.

💵 …Ecuador has used the US dollar as its currency since 2000?

Getting a SIM

 • Buy a SIM ("chip") at a Claro, Tigo or CNT store, or at an authorised seller. Bring your passport or cédula — registration is required by law.
 • Stores are in La Libertad (around the centre and at the malls), Salinas and Santa Elena.
 • eSIM is available from Claro and Tigo; ask in store.
 • Top up ("recarga") at corner shops, pharmacies, with the network's app or through online banking.

Prices

Prepaid bundles (daily, weekly or monthly data) and postpaid plans change all the time — check the network's app or website before you buy. See Mobile Phone Plans Ecuador for how prepaid and postpaid work.

Mobile data or home internet?

Mobile data is perfect for visitors and a great backup, but for streaming, video calls and remote work you will want home internet — see Internet Service Providers. Public WiFi: WiFi Hotspots.
