💧 El Azúcar
The reservoir that fills your tap: where the peninsula's drinking water is stored before treatment.

El Azúcar is an inland comuna of Santa Elena parish, best known for the El Azúcar reservoir, a key link in the peninsula's water supply.

At a glance
Parish Santa Elena (urban parish), Santa Elena canton
Reservoir With Sube y Baja, about 70 million m³ of storage
Water About 70% of the comuna on Aguapen's piped network (2023)

How the water gets here

Water from the Daule river flows through the Chongón reservoir to the Sube y Baja and El Azúcar reservoirs, which together hold about 70 million m³. From there it goes on to the Atahualpa treatment plant and into the taps of Salinas, La Libertad and Santa Elena. The system has worked since 1999. See Water Supply on the Peninsula.
