🦀 Cangrejal de Olón
Two tiny protected mangroves at Olón — some of the last real mangrove forest on this coast.
The Cangrejal de Olón and the Esterillo de Oloncito are two small protected mangrove areas at Olón. Olón's estuary is one of only three on the canton's coast that still has real mangrove forest.
| At a glance | |
|---|---|
| Cangrejal de Olón | 6.87 ha, protected since 2002 |
| Esterillo de Oloncito | 2.33 ha, protected since 2001 |
| Nearby | About 1,285 ha of Olón's forest is protected under Socio Bosque |
Why it matters
Mangroves are nurseries for fish and crabs (the name cangrejal comes from cangrejo, crab) and shelter herons and other birds. Walk quietly and stay on the edges.
