Places

Specific spots worth knowing about, sorted loosely by what you'll do there. South to north.
🏖️ Beaches

Ayangue Bay — protected, turquoise, flat calm. Best snorkeling on the route
Playa Manglaralto — long gray-sand beach, local, almost no tourists
Montañita Main Break — the surf beach. Consistent, powerful Dec–Apr
Olón Beach — wide, calm, family-friendly. 3 km of open sand
San José Beach — wild, horses at low tide, no facilities — that's the point
Ayampe Beach — small, pristine, river mouth at the south end
Las Tunas Beach — quiet northern beach, whales pass close Jun–Sep

🌿 Nature & Reserves

Loma Alta Ecological Reserve — guided treks from Dos Mangas. Endemic birds, cloud forest, zero crowds
Manglaralto Estuary — mangroves navigable by kayak at high tide
Ayampe Cloud Forest — where the forest reaches the beach. Howler monkeys audible from the shore
Las Tunas Hanging Bridges — suspension bridges over jungle streams north of town
Río Ayampe — fresh water river mouth, good for swimming in low season

👁️ Viewpoints

La Rinconada Cliffs — dramatic headland with views north and south. Prime birdwatching and paragliding launch
Olón Church Mirador — clifftop Iglesia de Olón, visible for kilometers along the coast
Curia Clifftop — elevated ocean views between Olón and San José, small community, very quiet
Las Nuñez Sea Wall — low wall above the cove, painted murals, local fishing boats below
Montañita Point — the rocky headland at the north end of the main beach, sunrise views

🏘️ Towns Worth a Walk

Montañita — compact, walkable, markets, surf shops, food at every corner
Ayangue — tiny cove village, everything within five minutes on foot
Las Nuñez — artisan workshops, murals, fishermen mending nets at the dock
Dos Mangas — inland from Manglaralto, the trailhead community for Loma Alta
La Entrada — painted murals facing the sea, gateway to Manabí, worth a stop

Best Spot For...

Snorkeling Ayangue. No contest.

Surfing Montañita main break. Lessons available year-round.

Hiking Loma Alta Reserve via Dos Mangas. Go with a local guide.

Whales Las Tunas and La Rinconada. Jun–Sep, morning hours.

Horses San José. Low tide. Ask in town.

Birdwatch La Rinconada cliffs. Ayampe forest at dawn.

Do nothing Olón. Big beach, few people, no pressure.

Good to Know
Montañita surf is not for beginners without instruction. The shore break is fast. Take a lesson first.
Loma Alta Reserve requires entering through Dos Mangas village. Hire a local guide — the trails are not well marked and the forest is dense.
Ayangue is protected by a headland on both sides. Currents are minimal year-round — it's genuinely safe for families and non-swimmers.
Getting between towns is easy — frequent buses run the E-15 all day. Flag one down from the roadside.
High season (Dec–May): Montañita fills completely. Everything else on the route is much quieter and significantly cheaper.

🚑 Emergency
General: 911
Nearest hospital: La Libertad or Santa Elena
Montañita has a basic health subcentro.
