How the water gets here
Water from the Daule river flows through the Chongón reservoir to the Sube y Baja and El Azúcar reservoirs, which together hold about 70 million m³. From there it goes on to the Atahualpa treatment plant and into the taps of Salinas, La Libertad and Santa Elena. The system has worked since 1999. See Water Supply on the Peninsula.
