Kite flying is a popular leisure activity on the Santa Elena Peninsula, particularly during the dry/windy season (June–November) when strong and consistent southerly Pacific winds provide ideal conditions. Ecuadorian families take to the beaches and clifftops with a variety of kites during this season.

When to Fly Kites

The dry season (June–November) brings the Garúa — a period of persistent coastal wind, mist, and overcast skies driven by the Humboldt Current. While this season is less sunny, the consistent southerly winds are perfect for kite flying. Wind speeds of 15–25 km/h are typical; stronger on clifftops.

The wet season (December–May) is calmer and less suitable for kite flying.

Best Locations

  • Clifftops around La Libertad — The coastal escarpments catch the wind reliably
  • Punta Carnero headland — Exposed to full ocean wind
  • Beaches between Salinas and La Libertad — Open beach with consistent wind
  • REMACOPSE area — Flat, open, excellent wind exposure

Getting a Kite

Basic plastic and nylon kites are sold by street vendors throughout the Peninsula, particularly during the windy season. Prices start at $1–$5 for simple kites. Larger sport kites may be available from toy shops in La Libertad.

Kite Surfing

The same consistent winds that make kite flying popular also attract kite surfers. See Surfing for information on kite surfing on the Peninsula.
