The Peregrinación de la Virgen del Mar is a sea procession held in La Libertad on the third Friday of June. The image of the Virgin leaves Barrio La Carioca on the largest boat, while dozens of fishing launches circle the bay with it. The festival honours the seafaring traditions of the coast, from the Valdivia to the Manteño peoples.

Other festivals in La Libertad

  • Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza: patron-saint festival — see Santuario Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza.

  • 21 November – 21 December: Virgen del Quinche, ending with fireworks.
  • Holy Week: Jesús del Gran Poder, at the chapel on Calle Guayaquil and 5ª Avenida.
