Santuario Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza
Appearance
The Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza is the main church of La Libertad, on the highest point of downtown. The Franciscans founded the parish in 1942.
Its image of the Virgin is an 18th-century carving attributed to the Quito school (the plan names "Bernardo de Legonda", probably the sculptor Bernardo de Legarda). It was recovered from the rubble of the old church on 11 December 1966.
Festivals
- Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza — the city's patron-saint festival.
- The Peregrinación de la Virgen del Mar in June is the city's other great religious event.
