La Libertad

Seafood & Local

The Terminal Pesquero (fishing port) area in La Libertad has informal lunch restaurants (ceviicherías and comedores) serving the freshest ceviche and fish on the peninsula at low prices ($3–7). These are not formal restaurants but small operations that open for lunch only.

Food Tips

  • Ceviche: The peninsula is one of Ecuador's best ceviche regions. Shrimp (camarón) and mixed seafood ceviche are the standards. Best eaten at lunch, especially near the fishing ports.
  • Encebollado: Ecuador's national hangover cure (fish and onion soup) is available at many breakfast spots. An excellent way to start the day.
  • Fresh fish: The best fresh fish is found near the ports (La Libertad, Anconcito) — ask for el pescado del día (fish of the day).
  • High season prices: Restaurants in tourist areas of Salinas increase prices by 20–40% during high season (Dec–May) and feriados.
  • Cash: Smaller restaurants and comedores are cash-only.
