'''October 7''' is the Día de Provincialización de Santa Elena — the anniversary of the creation of Santa Elena Province on 7 October 2007, when it was separated from Guayas Province by decree. It is the most important civic holiday in the province, celebrated across all three cantons.

Before 2007, the Santa Elena Peninsula was part of Guayas Province, administered from Guayaquil. The separation created Ecuador's newest province and gave the peninsula its own prefectura, gobernación, and independent provincial budget.
