OVERVIEW
================================================ -->
Overview
Santa Elena is both the name of the province and its capital canton — the administrative, historical, and geographic backbone of the peninsula. While Salinas draws most of the tourists and La Libertad handles most of the commerce, Santa Elena is where the peninsula's administrative functions concentrate and where its deepest history is held.

The canton is by far the largest of the three by area, stretching inland from the coast to encompass dry forest, agricultural zones, and highland villages. The cantonal seat — Santa Elena city — sits roughly in the centre of the peninsula's urban strip, between La Libertad to the west and the outer rural parishes to the east.

Santa Elena became the capital of the newly created Santa Elena Province in 2007, when the province separated from Guayas. The canton itself was cantonized in 1839, making it the oldest of the three.
KEY ATTRACTIONS
================================================ -->
Key Attractions
Amantes de Sumpa
Amantes de Sumpa is the most significant archaeological site on the peninsula. The site preserves the remains of the Las Vegas culture — one of the oldest settled cultures in the Americas, dating back approximately 8,000 years. The centrepiece is the famous Amantes de Sumpa burial — two skeletons in an embrace, dated to c. 6,000 BCE. The museum on-site is open to the public and offers guided tours in Spanish.

Ancón — Ecuador's Oil History
Ancón is the site of Ecuador's first commercial oil well, drilled in 1911. The town retains its historic character as an oil settlement and offers an unusual window into the early petroleum industry. Natural hydrocarbon surface outcrops (afloramientos) — natural oil seeps — remain visible in the area.

Baños de San Vicente
Baños de San Vicente is a geothermal resort complex located inland from the coast, known for thermal mud baths, sulphur pools, and spa facilities. It draws visitors from across the peninsula and from Guayaquil seeking therapeutic bathing. The facilities include pools at different temperatures and mud applications.

Chanduy
Chanduy is a small coastal fishing village to the south of the main peninsula urban zone. The Chanduy salt flats — a separate body of water from the Ecuasal pans — attract waterbirds and offer a more remote birdwatching experience.

<!-- ================================================
PARISHES
================================================ -->
Parishes
Santa Elena canton is divided into multiple rural parishes in addition to the urban cantonal seat:

* Santa Elena (urban — cabecera cantonal)
* Ancón — historic oil town
* Colonche — rural inland parish; gateway to Loma Alta Ecological Reserve
* Chanduy — coastal fishing parish
* Chongón — inland boundary with Guayas
* Manglaralto — northern coastal parish; gateway to the Ruta del Spondylus
* Simón Bolívar (Javita) — rural parish
* Atahualpa (Caracol) — rural parish

Getting There
Santa Elena city is served by all buses running between La Libertad / Salinas and Guayaquil. The Terminal Terrestre Regional Sumpa in Santa Elena is the inter-provincial bus hub for the canton. Buses to and from Guayaquil run frequently throughout the day; journey time approximately 2–2.5 hours.
