== Overview ==

The Río Ayampe meets the Pacific at the south end of [[Ayampe]] village, forming a river mouth that is accessible for freshwater swimming. In the low season (June–November) when rainfall in the hills maintains river flow, the lower river creates calm, clear pools accessible from the beach — a counterpoint to the colder and rougher Pacific surf just metres away.

Swimming in freshwater rivers is popular with locals along the Ecuadorian coast, particularly in the dry season when the ocean temperature drops and the Pacific becomes uninviting for casual swimming. The Ayampe river provides a comfortable alternative.

== The Location ==

The '''Río Ayampe''' mouth is at the southern end of Ayampe beach, where the river crosses the sand to meet the sea. The best swimming is in the river itself, 50–200 metres inland from the beach where the flow slows into pools.

Access: walk south along Ayampe beach from the village, or follow the path along the river bank from the E-15 road.

== When to Go ==

The river is most reliably swimmable from '''June through November''', when rainfall in the cloud forest above (the [[Cloud Forest Trekking (Ruta del Spondylus)|Loma Alta Reserve]]) maintains water level. In the dry season (December–April) the river can run low or dry completely in drought years, though it usually maintains some flow.
