ECUAWIKI › SURFING › MONTAÑITA MAIN BREAK

The Montañita Main Break is the primary surf break in front of Montañita village — the most famous surfing destination on the Santa Elena Peninsula and one of Ecuador's top surf spots.

The Wave
The main break is a beach break over sand, producing left and right-hand waves depending on the swell direction. Wave quality varies significantly with conditions:

* December–April (wet season / swell season): The largest and best waves. Consistent SW ground swell produces well-shaped beach break waves 1–3m (3–10 ft). This is when Montañita hosts competitions.
* May–November (dry season): Smaller, less powerful conditions more suited to beginners and intermediate surfers. Wind swell only; cleaner mornings before the sea breeze builds.

The Lineup
The main break in front of the village is the busiest. At peak times (December–March weekends), the water fills with surfers of all levels. The break can be powerful and fast — intermediate to advanced surfers make the most of it.

Beginners should take lessons at the south end of the beach where conditions are gentler — see Surfing Lessons.

Facilities
* Multiple surf schools line the beachfront offering lessons and board rentals
* Board repair shops in the village
* Showers at some beachfront hostels (available to non-guests for a small fee)
* The famous Montañita party scene starts after surf sessions end

Hazards
* Powerful shorebreak at high tide can catch out beginners
* Crowded lineups in peak season
* Rock reef at the northern end of the break (near the point) — be aware of position
