Pickup football is informal and welcoming. Show up at a cancha in the late afternoon, watch for a few minutes, and ask to join — ''¿Puedo jugar?'' ("Can I play?"). Boots or sports shoes are helpful but trainers are fine on cement canchas.

The standard game on neighbourhood courts is often ''fútbol sala'' (futsal) — smaller teams, faster pace, cement surface.
