Overview
Fishing is the foundation of life on the Ruta del Spondylus. Every town and village on the route — from Ayangue to Las Tunas — has a fishing fleet. Artisanal fishing is the primary economy of communities like San José, Ayampe, and Las Tunas, where fiberglass pangas launch before dawn and return by mid-morning.

Visitor fishing on the route is informal and participant-arranged. There are no commercial sport fishing operators based on the route itself. Shore fishing, watching the fishing boats come in, or negotiating to join a boat trip are all possible — but on local terms and timescales.

Shore Fishing
Shore casting with rod or handline is practised at every beach village. The best shore fishing is at rocky points and headlands, particularly at Ayangue's bay edges, La Rinconada's clifftop rocks, and the rocky outcrops at Ayampe.

Common shore-caught species: corvina (sea bass), lisa (mullet), and smaller reef fish. Equipment is not available to rent — bring your own or buy locally.

Artisanal Boat Trips
In San José, Ayampe, Las Tunas, and other fishing villages, it is sometimes possible to join an early morning fishing trip by asking the night before. These are not organised tours — you are asking to join a working fishing trip. Boats leave between 4–6 am and return 3–5 hours later with the catch.

Negotiate a price in advance (approximately $15–30 for joining a trip); understand that you are a guest on a working boat; be on time; bring food and water.

Watching the Fishing Boats
Even without fishing yourself, the arrival of the boats is worth watching. In San José particularly, the boats land on the beach between 7–10 am and the catch is sorted, sold, and packed at the water's edge. Fresh fish bought directly from the boat — usually for restaurants but occasionally to individual buyers — is one of the most authentic market experiences on the coast.

Getting There
All fishing villages are on the E-15. San José is approximately 30–40 minutes north of Montañita. Las Tunas is approximately 1 hour north.
