== Overview ==

'''December 22''' is the Día de Cantonización de Salinas — the anniversary of Salinas's formal separation from Santa Elena canton on 22 December 1937, decreed by General Alberto Enríquez Gallo. It is the most important civic holiday in Salinas canton and one of the biggest celebrations of the year on the entire peninsula.

The festivities typically span a week — from approximately December 18–22 — with the main events on December 22 itself.

== Key Events ==

* '''Carreras acuáticas''' (aquatic races) — the signature event; swimming and boat races on the bay
* '''Desfile cívico''' — civic parade with schools, institutions, and military units
* '''Live concerts''' on the malecón and in the main squares
* '''Sports events''' — cycling, triathlon, and water sports competitions often coincide
* '''Cultural acts''' organised by the Municipio de Salinas

== Practical Notes ==

* The holiday falls during the beach season — Salinas is already busy in late December with Christmas and New Year visitors; book accommodation early
* December 22 is a significant local holiday; many government offices and businesses close
* The celebrations take place primarily on and around the Salinas malecón

== Historical Context ==

Salinas became a canton on 22 December 1937, separating from Santa Elena canton which had previously administered the entire western peninsula. The separation reflected the growing economic importance of Salinas as a tourism and fishing centre distinct from the agricultural and administrative character of Santa Elena.
