The Río Ayampe is a small coastal river that flows from the cloud forest of the Cordillera Colonche through Ayampe village and enters the Pacific at the southern end of Ayampe Beach. The river mouth creates one of the distinctive features of the Ayampe landscape — freshwater meeting saltwater, with the surf break at the river mouth.

River Swimming

The upper section of the Río Ayampe, above where the river is influenced by tidal saltwater, provides one of the only safe swimming options near Ayampe. The sea itself at Ayampe is not suitable for casual bathing (surf conditions), and the beach doesn't have a calm bay like Ayangue. The river — cool, freshwater, shaded by riparian forest — is the local alternative, particularly in the warmer months.

Best visited in the morning before the heat peaks. The shallow pools and small cascades in the lower forest section are easy to access on foot from the village.

The confluence of the Río Ayampe and the Pacific creates a surf break at the river mouth. The freshwater outflow and the changing sandbar conditions make this a variable but sometimes excellent left-hand break. Local surfers know it well.

The river mouth is also a birding spot — the transition between riparian forest, estuary, and ocean attracts a wide range of species.

Ecological Significance

The Río Ayampe drains the cloud forest above and carries with it the nutrients and biodiversity connectivity that keep the coastal ecosystem functioning. The river and its floodplain are part of the wildlife corridor connecting the forest to the sea. It is considered one of the better-preserved small coastal river systems in the province.
